Snow, ice from winter storm likely to remain through weekend

Wintery weather began Wednesday afternoon, continuing with icy conditions and snow Thursday. With temperatures in the forecast rarely about freezing, the white wonderland is likely to stick around through the weekend in the Wichita Falls area.

The National Weather Service reports temperatures through the weekend in Wichita Falls will be in the high 30s with lows in the teens at night. Skies will be sunny, though, with little wind and no more precipitation in the forecast.

The Texas Department of Transportation urges drivers to remain cautious, however, saying this storm created worse conditions than they had expected on roadways. The thick ice sheet under the snow is worse than the blizzard of 2009, TxDOT reports.

The city of Wichita Falls said roadways remain treacherous and they urge people to stay home if possible. The streets department has cleared snow by Friday on many roads and they spread a traction mixture at intersections and hills.

Wichita Falls Police Department reported Friday morning that there had been 47 vehicle accidents in the city since Wednesday, Feb. 2.

The chilly days did not keep everyone inside as many Wichitans enjoyed a quick walk with friends or their dogs, children tried their hand at snowmen and sliding down a snow hill.
