See star chef’s large, chic San Francisco loft with restaurant below, listed at $5.5M

Star chef Charles Phan, a two-time James Beard Award winner and owner of The Slanted Door restaurant, is selling his San Francisco residence for $5.5 million.

The three-bedroom, four-bathroom loft-style home spans 6,374 square feet with a spacious farm dining room adjacent to a commercial-grade kitchen “allowing for a blend of both preparation and enjoyment of the food,” according to the official property listing.

Trecia Knapp of Sotheby’s International Realty – San Francisco Brokerage is the listing agent.

“Imagine entertaining your friends by providing a dining feast made in a kitchen designed and built by a James Beard Awarded chef,” the listing adds.

If the night calls for al fresco dining, there’s also a spacious roof deck with panoramic views of the city.

Don’t want to prepare a meal at all? No problem. Below the residence is Mattina, a Cal-Italian restaurant and cafe owned by by Matthew Accarrino, a James Beard Award nominee.

The loft was on the market in 2021 for $6.2 million, but the listing was removed after 72 days. It became available again in early August. Phan bought the property in 2005 for $1.775 million, according to public records.

The light and open loft is so large it extends from Wilmot Street to Bush Street, along Filmore St., with the San Francisco address of 107 Wilmot/2232 Bush St.

Inside, the private primary bedroom, off Wilmot, is “quiet and delightful,” according to Sotheby’s International Realty. The primary bathroom has a spacious walk-in closet. On the other side of the loft are two more bedrooms, each with its own loft.

There’s an open space for games and entertaining.

“This residence is a unique combination of luxurious city living in a chic industrial-style loft building,” the listing states.

The three-story loft, originally built in 1905, stands at the edge of Pacific Heights’ Fillmore Shopping District.

Charles Phan is “the inventor of modern Vietnamese cuisine in America,” according to the Food Network. Born in Da Lat, Vietnam in 1962, his family relocated just before the fall of Saigon, and spent two years in Guam before finally settling in San Francisco’s Chinatown in 1977.

In 2004, Phan won the James Beard Foundation award for “Best Chef: California.” His restaurant, The Slanted Door, was nominated in the “Outstanding Restaurant” category in 2008 and 2013 before winning the award in 2014, according to the Food Network. Phan was nominated “Outstanding Chef” by the foundation in 2010 and 2011.
