Sacramento weekend guide: Smash Mouth concert, seafood festival, Cirque du Soleil in town
July is coming to an end, and the first, full month of summer is almost over.
Forecasts show temperatures this weekend heating up to a high of 99 degrees Friday and the mid-90s for the rest of the weekend.
The weather service advises the capital region to practice heat safety by staying hydrated and seeking shade while outdoors.
If you haven’t been able to take advantage of the summertime yet, Sacramento has several events planned for the weekend of July 29 to July 31:
Friday
Get discount admission at the children’s museum
2701 Prospect Park Dr., Rancho Cordova
The Sacramento Children’s Museum offers discounted tickets at $5 every Friday in July for the whole family. July 30 is the last Friday of the month.
The educational museum, meant for kids 8 and under, is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. Regular tickets are $8.50 and can be purchased at the admission desk, according to the museum website.
Saturday
Catch a NorCal band play at Cal Expo
California State Fair: 1600 Exposition Blvd.
Smash Mouth is performing at 8 p.m. on the Golden 1 Stage at the State Fair this Saturday. The ’90s rock band was formed in San Jose and has produced hits including “All Star” and “Walkin’ On the Sun.” It also famously covered the song “I’m a Believer” for the “Shrek” movie soundtrack.
Tickets are free for fairgoers. General admission prices are $15 and a separate fair ticket is required.
Eat seafood and listen to soul music at this festival
River Walk Park: 651 Second St., West Sacramento
West Sacramento’s seafood and soul festival is returning to the River Walk Park this year. In addition to oysters, lobsters and other seafood dishes, the event features a concert with singer Maxine Jone, member of the former R&B group En Vogue.
General admission tickets are $15 on Eventbrite. Bringing lawn chairs and umbrellas is recommended.
Sunday
Watch a ‘legendary’ jazz icon at The Sofia
2700 Capitol Ave.
Jazz blues musician and San Francisco native, Joe Louis Walker, is coming to The Sofia theater. Walker, now 72, was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame and is performing alongside another blues artist, Katie Knipp.
