Roundup: Granville boys golf qualifies for district tournament

Carter Budreau fired a 72 at Denison Golf Club on Tuesday, taking runner-up honors and leading Granville to a third-place finish during the Division I sectional tournament.

The Blue Aces totaled 318 and qualified to next Tuesday's district tournament at Apple Valley. Sam Pfau at 76, Alex Organ 84 and Chase Holtzapple and Brogan Burnett 86 apiece followed Budreau.

Skyler Graham shot 80 for Watkins Memorial, finishing just three shots shy of district qualification. Cade Dunlap shot 88 to lead Licking Heights.

Bolte shoots 77

Mitch Bolte fired a 77 at Darby Creek to lead Newark during the Division I sectional tournament.

Bolte missed out on district qualification by just two shots.

GIRLS GOLF

Granville qualifies for district

Granville totaled 362 at Blacklick Woods to place third in the Division I sectional tournament and qualify for Monday's district tournament at The Links at Echo Springs.

Lydia Wigal shot 87 to lead the Blue Aces, and following close behind were Olivia Jones at 88, Hannah Huggins 91, Avery Staten 96 and Jaiden Tripp 97.

GIRLS TENNIS

Watkins wins

Seniors Jenna Share and Riley Janiszewski won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles for Watkins Memorial in a 4-1 victory against Zanesville to complete the regular season.

Kaiya Minier, 6-4, 6-3, Abigail Richardson, 6-2, 6-0, and Claudia Schaar, 6-1, 6-1, swept the singles matches for the Warriors (10-6).

Granville competes in sectional

Sophia Tuma at singles won a pair of matches during the Division II sectional tournament at Columbus School for Girls.

Abby Sanders and Grace Emery each won once as did Eliza Kurtz and Abby Riley at doubles.

VOLLEYBALL

Johnstown sweeps

Kate Ruffle totaled seven kills and 10 digs for Johnstown in a victory against visiting Licking Valley, 25-21, 25-16, 25-13, in Licking County League play.

Emily Yanczura added six aces and 23 assists for the Johnnies (15-3, 10-2).

Cassie Orr and Rylee Sensabaugh had eight kills apiece and Daizi Hardbarger 12 digs for the Panthers (4-14, 3-9).

Watkins wins at Lakewood

McKayla Jellison and Jamisen Justice notched eight kills apiece for Watkins Memorial in a sweep at Lakewood, 25-14, 25-15, 25-14, in LCL play.

Riley Buechner added five aces, Mya Jackson 18 digs and Elise Adelman 18 assists for the Warriors (14-4, 10-1), who are tied for No. 19 in Division I in this week's state coaches poll.

Aubrey Howell had six kills and two blocks, Abi Miller 10 digs and Kenna Parkison 18 assists for the Lancers (3-14, 1-11).

NC wins

Sydney Gummer served six aces and recorded 14 assists for Newark Catholic in a sweep of visiting Zanesville (0-18, 0-11), 25-5, 25-3, 25-5, in LCL play.

Ava Gummer added eight kills, Malena Shonebarger six kills and Ava Heffley and Kylie Gibson six aces apiece for the Green Wave (17-2, 13-0), who are ranked No. 6 in Division IV in this week's state coaches poll and can clinch an outright Cardinal Division title with a victory at home against Utica on Thursday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Watkins ties

Jaylyn Thornton recorded a goal and an assist for Watkins Memorial in a 2-2 tie at Olentangy.

Kiley Jones-Barrera added a goal and Lindsey Castillo an assist for the Warriors (10-2-2). Rilyn Warner and Madison Skeese combined for three saves.

BOYS SOCCER

GCA wins

Luke Holt recorded a hat trick for Granville Christian in an 8-0 victory at Mansfield St. Peter's.

Gavin Pound and Landen Pound added two goals apiece, Zac Stump one goal and Landen Pound and Noah Tice a team-high three assists apiece for the Lions (8-5-1). Jayden Leija made one save.

Newark ties

Bryce Casteel's first career goal, coming on a penalty kick, helped Newark tie visiting Northland 2-2.

Brendan Nash also scored for the Wildcats (3-9-1).

Watkins falls on road

Watkins Memorial could not keep pace with host Olentangy Liberty in a 5-2 defeat.

Josh Hare and Tyler Vincent scored for the Warriors (8-5-1) with Bo Howard and Chase Massie each picking up an assist. Nic Sarver made eight saves.

Granville falls at home

Granville, ranked No. 12 in Division II in this week's state coaches poll, dropped a 4-0 match to visiting Dublin Coffman.
