'Rookie of the Year' Turns 25: Henry Rowengartner tells you three things you didn't know about the movie
It’s been 25 years since the world was introduced to Henry Rowengartner, the movie character who lived every kid’s dream when he could suddenly throw 100 mph and signed with the Chicago Cubs as a 12-year-old.
“Rookie of the Year,” the film that tells the Rowengartner story, debuted in theaters 25 years ago Saturday. Yes, yes — we’re all old.
On this week’s installment of my Open Mike video series, I talked to actor Thomas Ian Nicholas, who played Rowengartner, for some 25-year-old stories about “Rookie of the Year.” Along the way, Nicholas talked about filming at Wrigley Field, pitching to Barry Bonds and the World Series ring used in the movie.
Nicholas is 37 these days. He went on to star in the “American Pie” movies, among a very long list of credits that’s seen him portray the likes of Walt Disney and Frank Sinatra Jr. He also leads the Thomas Ian Nicholas Band, which is on tour this summer and often appears in Wrigleyville, playing to Cubs fans who love Henry Rowengartner like he were a real person.
