From the outside looking in, the Los Angeles Lakers’ pursuit of Russell Westbrook came out of nowhere. However, this blockbuster trade has actually been brewing for the past few weeks.

According to Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times, Westbrook went to LeBron James’ home two weeks ago to discuss his potential fit with the Lakers. All-Star forward Anthony Davis was also present for this meeting.

Russell Westbrook’s reputation has taken a hit over the last couple of seasons. He’s been called a bad teammate, poor playoff performer, and stat-padder. That’s why it was important for the former MVP to sit down with the Lakers’ star duo and explain why a star-studded trio could work in Los Angeles.

“They talked about putting their egos aside and playing as one in their quest to bring the Lakers another NBA championship,” Turner wrote, via the Los Angeles Times. “Westbrook talked about how his only intention was winning and coming back home to Los Angeles to become a champion.”

James and Davis also discussed potentially changing their positions for the 2021-22 season. The former would go from small forward to power forward, whereas the latter would switch from power forward to center.

NBA fans won’t really learn if this trio of Davis, James and Westbrook works well with each other until the new season begins.

The good news, however, is that all three superstars seem willing to sacrifice their individual success for team success. That could go a long way next season.
