Possible flash floods in New Mexico, Texas: Monday weather forecast updates

While heavy rain and flash floods are possible across the southern High Plains over the next few days, the northern Plains will see above-average temperatures throughout the region, the National Weather Service said.

Meanwhile, Texas will experience lower temperatures Monday before ramping back up to near 80 degrees by the middle of the week, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Alyssa Smithmyer.

Here's what to know about Monday’s weather forecast:

Heavy rain and possible flash floods in New Mexico, Texas areas

Northeast New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle could see possible flash floods after recent rain has "overly saturated ground conditions," the weather service said.

The Weather Prediction Center indicates a "slight risk" for excessive rainfall from western Oklahoma to northeast New Mexico, including the Texas Panhandle, through Monday morning, the weather service said. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are also expected throughout the High Plains, southern Plains, Rockies and northern Great Basin.

"Some storms in these regions may also produce intense downpours and lead to localized flash flooding," the weather service said.

Scattered showers, storms in the Great Lakes, northern Plains region

A sinking cold front entering the Great Lakes and northern Plains may produce scattered showers and storms throughout the region, the weather service said.

Smoky skies in the northern U.S. triggers air quality alerts

Wildfire smoke moving southward out of Canada and over the northern part of the country has triggered air quality alerts over parts of the Upper Great Lakes, according to the weather service. This includes the Chicago, Milwaukee and Buffalo metro areas.
