Police fear woman who caused Tour de France crash may have fled the country

French police are searching for a woman who caused a massive crash during Saturday’s leg of the Tour de France and fear she may have fled the country.

The woman, who was wearing a green hat, glasses, red-and-white stripe shirt, yellow raincoat and jeans, has not been seen since Saturday, having escaped the chaotic scene after causing a crash during stage one of the race. She had stepped onto the road to wave a sign reading “Allez Opi-Omi!,” a greeting to her grandparents, as the cyclists zoomed past, according to French newspaper L’Equipe.

Video of the incident shows German cyclist Tony Martin clip the woman’s sign and fall, setting off a chain reaction that led to 21 racers and spectators being injured.

Race organizers have already declared their intent to sue the woman. However, according to Ouest-France, the woman, who is believed to be German, has already flown out of the country and cannot be found.

The race has already seen two other crashes that have shaken the standings with 18 more stages remaining. Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel currently maintains a narrow overall lead.
