Police cancel Silver Alert after man with dementia found safe

Update: Gary Michael Berger was located safe, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police issued a Silver Alert for a 78-year-old man who may be on his way to the Kansas City airport, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said Wednesday.

Gary Michael Berger was last seen Wednesday morning in Wood Heights, Missouri. He left his residence and may be traveling on foot to Kansas City International Airport in an attempt to get home to Michigan, police said.

Berger has dementia, difficulty with speech and wears braces on both knees, the Ray County Sheriff’s Department said.

Berger is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs around 235 pounds. He has brown and gray hair, blue eyes and a gray goatee. He was last seen wearing a blue Hawaiian shirt with tan flowers on it, tan shorts and black shoes, according to the alert. He was carrying a black travel case.

Berger also has a large tattoo on his right forearm of a snake and a sword, police said.
