Shooting suspect surrenders after hours-long standoff at Hampton Inn near Detroit: police

A gunman hid for hours in a Detroit-area hotel before finally surrendering to authorities Thursday night, police said.

The unidentified suspect barricaded himself inside a Hampton Inn in Dearborn, Mich., and wouldn’t come out for hours despite negotiating teams’ efforts, according to Michigan State Police.

At least one victim was reportedly transported from the scene, but cops did not say if the shooting was fatal.

They swarmed the Hampton Inn shortly after gunfire was reported, describing the scene as “extremely dangerous” and warning the public to stay away.

“There are still shots being fired by the suspect,” state police said around 2 p.m.. “Troopers and officers are working on clearing the entire area around the hotel.”

The suspect was “contained” shortly after police responded, but he remained a danger to the community for hours while negotiations dragged on.

Finally, shortly before 9 p.m., Michigan State Police said, “The barricaded gunman has been taken into custody without incident.”

Dearborn is located about seven miles west of downtown Detroit. The nearby DuVall Elementary School went into to a partial lockdown amid the chaos.

“There is a situation outside the building and we are not allowing anyone into the school at this time,” read an announcement on the school’s website. “All of our staff and students are safe and our learning and day is continuing. There will be no outside activity at DuVall.”
