Plano City Council passes permanent ban on new short-term rentals in single-family neighborhoods

PLANO, Texas - Plano City Council leaders voted for more permanent regulations for new short-term rentals.

The council Monday night approved a measure that bans all STRs in single-family neighborhoods, but they will be allowed in areas where businesses are allowed to operate.

New short-term rentals can also operate with on-site management in parts of the city labeled "heritage districts" in Haggard Park and Downtown.

It was an option that was supported by several community members at Monday’s meeting.

"This is what you want Plano neighborhoods to be: active, engaged, connected," one speaker said. "Neighborhoods survive because of people who live there. STRs are empty homes owned by investors. Please ban STRs in single-family residential areas."

This will replace the temporary ban on all new short-term rentals put in place last year. That ban came following an outcry from some members of the community.

In 2022, Plano police busted what they say was a brothel being operated out of a short-term rental.
