Petra Kvitova withdraws from French Open after injuring ankle at press conference

After winning just one match, bad luck has ended Petra Kvitova's time at the French Open.

The Czech tennis player announced on Tuesday that she's withdrawing from Roland-Garros due to a freak ankle injury she sustained on Sunday during her post-match media conference.

"It is with great disappointment that I announce my withdrawal from Roland Garros. During my post-match press requirements on Sunday I fell and hurt my ankle. Unfortunately, after an MRI and much discussion with my team, I have made the tough decision that it would be unwise to play on it. It's incredibly bad luck, but I will stay strong and do my best to recover in time for the grass-court season."

Kvitova, ranked No. 11 in the world by the WTA, won her Round 1 match against Greet Minnen after three hard-fought sets. She was scheduled to face Elena Vesnina of Russia in Round 2. Vesnina is automatically moving on to Round 3 due to Kvitova's exit.

Kvitova said she hopes to recover in time for grass court season, which is due to start next week. She'll likely turn her full attention now to Wimbledon, where she won in both 2011 and 2014. Wimbledon doesn't start until June 28, so her ankle will have nearly a full month to heal.
