Pedestrian wasn’t in crosswalk when hit by vehicle in Fresno. She has died, coroner says

A woman recently struck by a car while on foot in Fresno was identified Friday as the victim of a fatal collision.

The Fresno County Coroner’s Office said Yohanna Gomez, 34, of Hanford was the pedestrian struck about 9:45 p.m. Saturday on Gettysburg Avenue near First Street.

Police initially reported that she had suffered major injuries to the head but was breathing and was still in surgery Sunday morning at a Fresno hospital.

She later died, the coroner confirmed.

She was fatally struck crossing Gettysburg and was not in a crosswalk, police said. A driver did not see the woman and struck her.

“We have witnesses traveling behind the vehicle who said the same thing,” Police Lt. Robert Dewey said on Saturday. “No time to stop before the pedestrian crossed.”

Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected. Police said the driver was driving the speed limit.
