Homeless man struck, killed in Winter Haven crash: PCSO

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - A homeless man was struck and killed in a crash in Winter Haven while standing in the middle of the road early Thursday morning, according to authorities.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, an Iowa man was driving a red Kia when he reportedly saw a 43-year-old man in the middle of the road near Cypress Gardens Boulevard and Ruby Lake Drive.

The driver braked but was unable to avoid striking the homeless man, who frequently crosses Cypress Gardens Boulevard to go to the 7-Eleven store and Murphy gas station in the area.

According to PCSO, the pedestrian was walking north across the four-lane highway outside the pedestrian-designated area.

First responders performed CPR on the man but were unable to resuscitate him, and he was declared dead at the scene.

The driver remained on the scene, authorities said.

No impairment was detected on the driver's part, deputies said, but impairment of the pedestrian is being investigated.
