A man who attacked a stranger in a cafe with a seagull while drunk has been jailed for 16 months.

Paul Elcombe, 29, threw the bird at victim Kyle Towers before kicking and punching him during the incident on 12 May, 2019.

Elcombe was walking home after two days drinking and taking drugs and picked up the injured bird from the road.

He then started showing it to customers in Goodbody's cafe in Plymouth, Devon, before throwing it at Towers.

Elcombe then beat him with his fists, feet and a belt.

He previously pleaded not guilty to one charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent at Plymouth Crown Court and a trial was initially due to take place in 2020, before it was postponed due to the pandemic.

But Elcombe, of no fixed address, changed his plea to guilty last month and he has now been jailed for 16 months and two weeks.

He also admitted failing to answer bail by not attending his trial in June last year.

The judge added an additional two weeks for that offence.
