Just a few days ago, the New England Patriots were handed their first loss of the season by division-rival Miami.

The Dolphins strolled into Foxboro and walked out with a 17-16 lead thanks to a late fumble from Patriots running back Damien Harris. It’s not the start the team wanted – especially when facing a divisional foe.

With the first game of the season out of the way, the Patriots are looking ahead to next week. As part of their natural progression before a game, the team had several players in for a tryout.

According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the Patriots had RB Nathan Cottrell (Georgia Tech), OT Derwin Gray (Maryland), G Jordan Meredith (Western Kentucky) and DB Linden Stephens (Cincinnati) in for free-agent workouts.

It’s unclear if any will make it to the active roster or the practice squad. However, offensive lineman Derwin Gray could be one to watch.

The Pittsburgh Steelers made Gray a seventh round pick in the 2019 NFL draft and he stayed with the team for two seasons. He eventually landed with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans before being released before the start of the 2021 season.

Gray could add solid depth to the offensive line – which is a strong part of the Patriots roster.
