One person found dead after alligator attack in South Carolina

A woman was killed Monday morning after an apparent alligator attack in South Carolina.

Deputies from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office arrived at Sun City Hilton Head, a gated retirement community, around 11:15 a.m. and found a large alligator “near the edge of a pond” guarding a woman’s body.

The woman’s body was recovered but she has not been identified, according to the Hilton Head Island Packet.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is working to locate and remove the alligator from the area, the sheriff’s department said.

The incident is not the first fatal encounter involving an alligator in South Carolina this summer. In June, a person was dragged into a retention pond near Myrtle Beach.
