  • Nancy and Paul Pelosi's neighbor is "heartsick" over the attack on Paul Friday morning.

  • Another neighbor blamed politicians for an uptick in violence around the country.

  • Paul Pelosi's attacker now faces federal assault and kidnapping charges.

One of Nancy and Paul Pelosi's San Francisco neighbors said she is "heartsick" over the attack on Paul Pelosi last Friday.

"It's heartbreaking," Metta Krach, The Pelosis' neighbor for 18 years, told Insider. "I think the world of both Paul and Nancy they're wonderful people and great public servants. I'm heartsick for them over this."

Krach and her daughter said they were awoken by the sounds of ambulances at 2:45 a.m. Friday.

Paul Pelosi was attacked in his home early Friday by a man who broke in looking for Nancy Pelosi, prosecutors alleged. The suspect is accused of breaking in through a glass door and entering the home shouting "Where is Nancy?"

Police said the suspect struck Paul Pelosi with a hammer after cops got to the home.

Another neighbor, who only shared his first name as Arnold, told Insider he only read about the attack in the news and doesn't know the Pelosis but blamed politicians for rising political violence.

"It's indicative of a national risk of an upsurge in politicians who signal endorsement of political violence," Arnold said.

A third neighbor who did not give her name but says she's lived in San Francisco for three decades told Insider she's worried that crime is up in the city and is starting to feel "a little unsafe."

According to San Francisco Police crime data, both assaults and robberies have ticked up in 2022 compared to the year before. The city reported 2,006 robberies through Oct. 30 this year compared to 1892 robberies at the same point last year, and 2,193 assaults compared to 1,982 the year prior.

However, 2022's incidents of violent crime are down from their pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Paul Pelosi was treated at the hospital and received surgery for wounds to his head, arm, and hand. He is expected to make a full recovery.
