One killed, seven injured during on-campus shooting at Grambling State University

Eight people were shot, including one fatally, early Sunday morning at Grambling State University during a homecoming event.

Officials for the Louisiana college said the shooting took place on the campus quad around 1 a.m. local time. At least one victim was a student who was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

A non-student has died from their injuries.

According to the school, one of the last events of homecoming week, an alumni breakfast bar and Mimosa Madness After Midnight, began around the same time as the shooting in the McCall Dining Center. Attendees were ordered to shelter in place until given the all-clear.

The rest of Sunday’s homecoming events were canceled, as have classes on Monday and Tuesday.

A curfew has also been put in place from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. “until further notice.”

“Our campus community has worked tirelessly to keep our students and others safe for the homecoming activities,” Grambling State President Rick Gallot said in a statement.

“Yet, with all of our planning and coordination with our local, parish, regional, and state law enforcement partners, we still find ourselves grieving the loss of life and injuries just as too many communities in our country have experienced as well. Why would someone come to the campus of our Dear Ole Grambling and shoot innocent people?”

A spokesperson for campus police did not immediately return a request for comment.

It’s unclear if any arrests have been made.

The investigation is being led by Louisiana State Police. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Louisiana State Police at 318-345-0000 or 318-374-2222.
