One dead, 10 injured including children ages 3 to 8, after car crashes into tree in California

An adult is dead and 10 other people, including nine children, suffered major injuries after police said a vehicle slammed into a tree in Northern California Wednesday night.

The single-vehicle wreck took place just before 8:15 p.m. about 10 miles north of downtown Sacramento in the city's Northgate neighborhood near a church, the Sacramento Police Department reported.

Zach Eaton, a police spokesperson, said officers responded to San Juan Road, found a smaller-sized sedan wrecked, and multiple people suffering from injuries ranging from serious to critical.

One adult was pronounced dead at the scene and another adult was taken to an area hospital to be treated for unspecified injuries.

Nine children inside the vehicle, ages 3 to 8, were also were also hurt, he said.

Cause of crash, who drove still under investigation

Justin Sylvia, a captain with the Sacramento Fire Department, said 10 ambulances responded to the scene to transport surviving victims to hospitals.

Eaton said it was not immediately known who drove the vehicle.

The cause of the wreck, which shut down a portion of the road it took place on for several hours, remains under investigation, Eaton said.
