No. 1 Maryland men pull away from No. 7 Notre Dame, 11-9 | College lacrosse roundup

Top-ranked Maryland men’s lacrosse got off to a slow start against No. 7 Notre Dame on Saturday, but the visiting Terps found their footing to secure an 11-9 victory and stay undefeated.

Maryland (5-0) trailed 2-1 in the first quarter before outscoring the Fighting Irish (1-2) 8-5 over the following two quarters. Logan Wisnauskas (Boys’ Latin) and Kyle Long each had two goals and two assists and Eric Malever and Jack Brennan each had two goals for the Terps. Luke Wierman lost four faceoffs in the first quarter before winning 18 of the next 20.

Maryland will host Albany on Saturday at noon.

No. 2 Virginia 19, No. 15 Johns Hopkins 8: The host Cavaliers (5-0) opened with a 6-0 run to cruise to victory. Payton Cormier had a game-high six goals and Connor Shellenberger had three goals for Virginia. Jack Keogh and Garrett Degnon each scored twice for the Blue Jays (3-3), who have lost two straight.

Hopkins hosts No. 14 Syracuse next Sunday at 4 p.m., their third ranked opponent in a row. Hopkins lost to then-No. 12 North Carolina, 15-10, on Feb. 27.

Loyola Maryland 14, Lafayette 12: Aidan Olmstead tied his career high with five goals to lead the visiting Greyhounds (1-4, 1-0 Patriot League) over the Leopards (2-3, 0-1). Joey Karnish had three goals and an assist for Loyola, which extended its 5-4 first-half lead with a 6-4 run in the third quarter. The Greyhounds host No. 10 Duke on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Lehigh 11, Navy 7: The visiting Mids (3-3, 0-1 Patriot League) fell to the Mountain Hawks (2-2, 1-0) for their second straight loss. Navy lost 14-13 to High Point on Feb. 26. The win ended a two-game slide by Lehigh.

Salisbury 15, Lynchburg 6: Isaac Thrasher had five goals and three assists and Jarrett Bromwell scored four goals as the host Sea Gulls (4-0) rolled past the Hornets (3-1). Salisbury broke a 3-3 tie with a 8-0 run that spanned both halves. The Sea Gulls host Randolph-Macon on Sunday at 2 p.m.

St. Mary’s 20, Shenandoah 4: Seahawks’ Kyrle Preis (Loyola Blakefield) and Ben Robertson (South River) each made four saves and anchored a defense that allowed no goals for three quarters. Host St. Mary’s was led by Jude Brown (John Carroll) with five goals, Aiden Doyle (Broadneck) with four goals and Brett Weiner (Dulaney) with three goals. The Hornets fell to 4-2.

Hood 18, Juniata 8: Colby Gallagher and Rio Muldoon each scored four goals to lead the visiting Blazers (3-1) over the Eagles (0-5). Hood trailed 2-1 early in the game before going on an 11-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters. Hood will travel to Delaware Valley on Saturday at 1 p.m.

St. Vincent 13, McDaniel 11: The visiting Green Terror (2-3) put together a 5-1 run late in the game that came up short. Nick DeLoriers had four goals and three assists and Dylan Vitale had four goals and an assist to lead McDaniel. Caleb Hawkins had a game-high six goals for the Bearcats (4-0).

Stockton 12, Washington College 9: The host Shoremen (0-2) built an early lead before falling behind in the second half to the Ospreys (2-1). Washington College led 6-4 in the first half. Brady McFalls and Cory Morgan each scored twice for the Shoremen.

Lebanon Valley 13, Goucher 8: The visiting Gophers (0-5) were held to three goals in the second half and fell to the Flying Dutchmen (3-2). Jared Heath had three goals and an assist for Goucher, which hosts Neumann at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Gettysburg 12, Stevenson 9: The visiting Mustangs (2-1) opened strong, but faded and fell to the Bullets (3-1). Stevenson led 7-5 in the first quarter before trailing 10-8 at the half. Ryan Coleman and Josh Brannan each scored twice for the Mustangs, who host Denison on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Tampa 16, Frostburg State 6: The Spartans (4-0) opened with a 7-0 run and beat the Bobcats (0-2) at William Amos Hough High School in Cornelius, North Carolina, a suburb of Charlotte. Harry Kilkowski had a game-high five goals for Tampa and Jake Bowman and Matthew Ward each scored twice for Frostburg State.

Women

No. 4 Maryland 19, William & Mary 7: Aurora Cordingley (Johns Hopkins) had three goals and five assists, Libby May (Hereford) and Hannah Leubecker each scored four goals and Shannon Smith (Roland Park) had three goals and an assist to lead the visiting Terps (5-0) over the Tribe (2-3). Maryland opened with a 3-0 run and used a 9-0 run that spanned both halves to put the game out of reach. The Terps host Villanova on Saturday at 1 p.m.

No. 9 Loyola Maryland 18, Penn State 9: Sam Fielder (Garrison Forest) had four goals and an assist and Sydni Black had a hat trick to lead the host Greyhounds (4-0) over the Nittany Lions (2-2). Loyola broke a 3-3 tie with a 7-2 run in the second quarter. Kaitlyn Larsson made 11 saves for the Greyhounds, who travel to Georgetown on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Mount St. Mary’s 11, High Point 6: Beanie Colson (Manchester Valley) scored five goals and the Mount defense held the visiting Panthers (0-5) to one goal in the first half. Mount St. Mary’s (4-2) outshot High Point, 30-22, and won 20 of 32 draws. The Mount travels to George Mason on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Stevenson 11, St. John Fisher 10: Kaitlyn Kozlowski (Mercy) scored back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter for an 11-8 lead and the host Mustangs (1-3) held on to beat the Cardinals (0-1). Kozlowski, Mary Marc (Mount de Sales) and McKenna Blick all finished with three goals for Stevenson, which hosts Mary Washington on Saturday at 1 p.m.

McDaniel 18, Susquehanna 13: The visiting Green Terror (3-0) used a strong second half to beat the River Hawks (3-2). McDaniel went on a 5-3 run in the third quarter to break a 7-7 tie and a 6-3 run in the fourth quarter to win. Acadia Noll scored a game-high five goals and Kealey Allison had four goals and three assists for the Green Terror.

Shepherd 11, Frostburg State 9: Anna Kearney (Catonsville) had a hat trick, but the Bobcats (0-4) fell to the Rams (2-1). Frostburg State led early in the game before Shepherd took control in the second quarter. A late rally in the fourth quarter cut the deficit, but the Bobcats couldn’t catch up.

Marymount 13, Hood 10: The host Blazers (1-2) took an 8-6 lead that faded in the second half against the Saints (4-1). Hood was led by Rebecca Turner, Kayla Juralewicz, Abby Burnette and Jess Lyons (Gerstell) with two goals each. The Blazers travel to McDaniel on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Muhlenberg 17, Goucher 3: The visiting Mules (3-0) took a 12-2 lead in the first half and kept the Gophers (0-4) winless. Goucher got goals from Julia Gazzola, Emily Flinn and Minami Ushijima. The Gophers host Marian (Wisconsin) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

State men

VMI 8, Mount St. Mary’s 7: Mount St. Mary’s started the week with a 2-0 winning streak and ended with a 2-0 losing streak. Hartley Jordan completed his hat trick with the the go-ahead goal with 2:57 left to play to lift Virginia Military Institute over the Mountaineers.

Mount St. Mary’s (3-4) fell 21-4 to No. 3 Georgetown (4-0), on Tuesday in Washington. The Mount, led by Connor McMahon and Cormac Giblin with two goals each, extended their 4-3 halftime lead with a 3-0 run to start the second half. Kadin Kightlinger gave Mount St. Mary’s a 7-3 lead with 10:53 left in the third quarter. The Keydets (2-3) answered with a 5-0 run that spanned both the third and fourth quarters to win.

State women

No. 18 Temple 14, UMBC 11: Dymin Gerow had five goals and an assist and Claire Bockstie (Maryvale) added four goals and an assist, but the host Retrievers (3-2) fell to the Owls (5-1). Temple trailed for most of the game before going on a 7-1 run in the fourth quarter to win. UMBC hosts Towson on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Dickinson 17, St. Mary’s 9: The Seahawks (1-2) used a 9-1 run in the second quarter to pull away from the Red Devils (1-3) in a Division III game at USA Lacrosse in Sparks. St. Mary’s was led by Lucy Gussio (Notre Dame Prep) with four goals and two assists, while Kelly Emge (Fallston) added three goals and two assists. MC Mortimer (Friends) had three goals and an assist and Colin Horton chipped in three goals. The Seahawks host Messiah on Thursday at 4 p.m.
