Nets Reportedly Discussing Extensions For Kyrie, James Harden

Kevin Durant agreed to a big new contract with the Brooklyn Nets over the summer, keeping him with the team through the 2025-26 season. Next up for the team: keeping Kyrie Irving and James Harden in Brooklyn.

Durant and Irving were a package deal for Brooklyn, ahead of the 2019-20 season. Durant missed that first year recovering from the torn Achilles tendon suffered during the 2019 NBA Finals, when he was a Golden State Warrior. He returned this past season, and played at an MVP level, albeit with a large chunk of missed time due to injury.

Last season, the team acquired Harden in a megadeal with the Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, and Cleveland Cavaliers. He helped keep the team afloat with Durant and Irving for stretches last season, but dealt with his own injuries late in the year, that hampered him during the playoffs.

We didn’t get a very long look at all three players healthy at the same time. When we did, however, it was pretty scary on the offensive end. General manager Sean Marks remains optimistic that he’ll get all three under new deals as we near the 2021-22 season.

This has been a common refrain for Marks this summer. In August, he said he believed all three superstars would be “signed, sealed, and delivered” by the start of training camp.

Now, training camp is right around the corner. NBA camps are set to start on Sept. 28. The Nets will be out in La Jolla, Calif., near the home of owner Joe Tsai. They begin preseason play on Oct. 3 against the Los Angeles Lakers. We’ll see if Marks can get those deals signed in the next week.

The Brooklyn Nets begin the 2021-22 regular season with a rematch of the playoff series that ended their 2020-21 campaign, at the defending NBA Champion Milwaukee Bucks on Oct. 19.
