Nationwide retailer is closing 16 stores in WA state. One of them in Tri-Cities
Big Lots Inc. will close its north Richland store, one of two in the Tri-Cities.
The Columbus, Ohio-based discount retailer (NYSE: BIG) confirmed it will close up to 315 of its 1,400 stores nationwide , double the 150 or so it initially targeted.
It notified the Securities and Exchange Commission of the change in an Aug. 2 filing that documents new, costlier terms associated with its $900 million revolving line of credit and a $200 million loan.
Neither Richland nor Kennewick appeared affected in the initial round of closures anticipated in 2024. But the new filing included Richland.
The closure is confirmed by a note on the company’s store locator website. No closure language appears for the Kennewick location.
Other stores closing in Washington include Big Lots in Bellingham, Burien, Covington, Everett, Kent, Lacey, Lakewood, Olympia, Port Angeles, Port Orchard, Puyallup, Renton, Spokane and Wenatchee.
The Richland store occupies a 25,000-square-foot space at 1743 George Washington Way in the Safeway-anchored Washington Plaza.
The move leaves a second significant vacancy at Washington Plaza. Office Depot left a 21,370-square-foot space vacant when it closed.
Built in 1981, Washington Plaza has about 152,000 square feet of retail space.
In addition to Safeway, tenants include Planet Fitness, AutoZone, T-Mobile, Sport Clips, Taco Bell, Hallmark and an Edward Jones office.
Starbucks recently moved from a spot by Safeway into a freestanding space that replaced the old Shari’s restaurant.
The property is represented by Kiemle Hagood, a commercial real estate brokerage.
