Mustang driver strikes teen in San Francisco during wild chase

SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco police on Tuesday stopped a hit-and-run driver who reportedly hit two people, including a 14-year-old girl, in a pursuit through the city before crashing.

Police say the crash was part of a chaotic morning involving the Mustang driver, who was involved in two hit-and-runs.

The first was in the Tenderloin, police said, where an Urban Alchemy was struck at about 8 a.m.

Officers said the driver had been spinning donuts at the intersection of Jones and Market and collided with the worker before taking off.

Police said in a statement that the driver continued to drive "recklessly, committing multiple traffic violations."

Police tried to stop the driver near Leavenworth and Eddy streets, but he failed to listen and police chased him.

During that pursuit, the driver struck a teenager near the 2100 block of Powell Street who was walking to Francisco Middle School at 9:30 a.m. and "continued to flee," police said.

At that point, police said they called off the chase "due to the safety risk the fleeing suspect posed to the public."

Both victims were taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

San Francisco Unified District spokeswoman Laura Dudnick said that the teen was hit while in the crosswalk on the way to school.

"The student was in stable condition and with their family," the school district said in a statement.

The Mustang driver ended up hitting other parked cars, but there were no other injuries.

Police were able to arrest the driver at Embarcadero and Green streets. He also was taken to the hospital for injuries not related to the incident.

Police did not immediately identify him.
