Murder suspect claims ‘Bigfoot’ had a role in death of fishing buddy

An Oklahoma fisherman allegedly told investigators he was forced to kill his fishing buddy after that man summoned Bigfoot.

Police believe Larry Doil Sanders was “under the influence of something” after he admitted to a family member that he killed Jimmy Knighten along the South Canadian River Saturday, NBC News reports.

The pair was catching catfish by hand over the weekend when Knighten “summoned Bigfoot” to come and kill Sanders after an argument, the suspect claimed. Sanders allegedly struck and strangled the victim, apparently believing he was in danger.

Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch, is described by Encyclopedia Britannica as a “large, hairy, humanlike creature believed by some people to exist in the northwestern United States and western Canada.”

Though sightings have been alleged, no such animal is known to have been captured or recovered. Knighten’s body was found Sunday afternoon, but the case is still being investigated.

“You still have to prove all the elements of the crime, and that what the suspect is telling you is actually what happened,” Pontotoc County Sheriff John Christian told NBC News.

Sanders is accused of murder in the first degree.

Oklahoma lawmaker Justin Humphrey proposed a bill in 2021 that would pay $2.1 million for any tracker who could bag a “bigfoot.” He confessed the idea was in good fun. The legislation was not passed.

In 2013, a Rogers County, Okla., man was reportedly shot in the back while he and a friend were hunting the seemingly mythical creature. The victim was expected to survive. The county sheriff said that to his knowledge, there had been no Bigfoot sightings in the area.
