Motorcycle rider killed Wichita grandma in road-rage shooting. He pleaded guilty
A motorcycle rider has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in a road-rage shooting that left a Wichita grandmother dead last year, court records show.
Lawyers plan to recommend 19-year-old Daryon Boone of Wichita spend a total of 26 years, 9 months in prison for killing 69-year-old Norma Williams and attempting to shoot Williams’ husband, according to his Aug. 5 plea agreement. Of the total recommended sentence, 166 months would be for the second-degree murder count and 155 months would be for the attempted first-degree murder count, to be served consecutively, or back to back, the plea agreement says.
Sedgwick County District Judge Jeffrey Goering will determine exactly how long Boone spends in prison when Boone is sentenced on Oct. 24.
Wichita police have said Williams and her husband were driving north on Greenwich near Kellogg at about 9:50 p.m. on Sept. 1, 2023, when they encountered a group of motorcycle riders. The motorcyclists were riding eastbound and ran the red light, police said previously. Boone, who was part of the group, struck the Williams’ 2021 Honda Ridgeline truck then followed the couple as they continued to drive.
Ultimately, Boone pulled a handgun and shot into the truck, fatally striking Williams in the head, police have said.
Williams was a passenger in the truck. Her husband was driving.
Witnesses told police around 30 motorcycle riders were in the group and that they were blocking the frontage road at Kellogg and Greenwich, running red lights, stopping traffic and driving in the wrong direction, a probable cause affidavit released by the court says. Some identified Boone as the shooter and at least one told police Boone always carried a handgun, the affidavit says.
When Boone was interviewed after his arrest, he denied involvement, denied being in the area and said he “only knew what happened with the shooting from the news and the people in his motorcycle group chat,” the affidavit says. He also denied carrying a gun.
Boone previously pleaded not guilty to first-degree felony murder and criminal discharge of a firearm. His jury trial had been scheduled to start next week, on Aug. 12.
