Minor injuries and snarled traffic after Greyhound bus crash in Tulare, CHP says

Traffic was snarled on Highway 99 early Wednesday after a bus crash that resulted in multiple minor injuries, the California Highway Patrol said.

The Greyhound bus carrying 23 passengers was headed north on Highway 99 south of Highway 137 in the city of Tulare around 3:30 a.m. when it rear-ended a big rig piggybacking two or three other big rig tractors, officer Brian Liles said.

The bus came to rest after striking the center divider, CHP said.

Liles said one passenger suffered a bump to the head and two or three others reported complaints of pain. Two were transported to the Tulare Regional Medical Center for evaluation, CHP said.

The 61-year-old bus driver did not report any injuries, CHP said. Neither did the 60-year-old big rig driver.

The CHP will review the bus’s onboard camera as part of the investigation, he said.

CHP could not immediately say where the bus originated or where it was going. A second bus took the remaining 21 passengers to their destination.

As of 7:15 a.m., all the northbound lanes were open but a single lane on the southbound side remained closed so Caltrans could fix the center railing, CHP said

The Tulare Fire Department shared pictures on Facebook that show firefighters helping passengers out of a window on the driver’s side of the bus. The door was pressed up against the damaged railing.

It was the second significant bus crash in Tulare County in recent memory.

About two months ago, a Greyhound bus headed to Fresno left Highway 99 in Tulare County and ended up on its side, injuring 17 passengers, according to the CHP.
