Milwaukee police chase, downtown arrests tied to homicide

MILWAUKEE - A Milwaukee police chase related to a homicide investigation ended with three arrests downtown on Tuesday, May 21. A fourth suspect is still sought.

The story behind the chase, though, began weeks ago in a fast food parking lot near 56th and North. Police said 41-year-old Stanley Smith was shot and killed on May 5, and the chase and arrests on Tuesday are connected to the homicide.

The miles-long pursuit started near 27th and Lisbon and ended around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday near Milwaukee and Mason.

"All I saw was two suspects being approached by an officer across from the garage, and then one other suspect being arrested at the corner of Wells and Milwaukee, and they took them into custody without any incident," a witness told FOX6 at the scene.

MPD said a 17-year-old boy, an 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old man were arrested. Police records show the 17-year-old was booked on a recommended charge of first-degree intentional homicide. It's unclear what charges the two men might face.

When Smith was shot, police said at the time they did not know who was responsible. Fast-forward to Tuesday when the pursuit of a white SUV wanted in the homicide ended downtown. Police blocked off roads around downtown near landmarks like BMO Tower.

Police said the vehicle involved in the chase was stolen, and several firearms were recovered. The FBI and US Marshals Service also responded to the scene.
