Massive water main break in Paramus leads to low pressure for six Bergen County towns

PARAMUS — Six Bergen County towns experienced low water pressure after a water main break in the borough before 1 a.m. Monday.

In a tweet, Veolia Water New Jersey put out a low water pressure warning because of a 36-inch water main break on Spring Valley Road at the intersection with Trinity Court, just off Route 4 west. Crews were working on repairs early Monday morning.

The break affected customers in Paramus, Hackensack, Hasbrouck Heights, Carlstadt, Maywood and Wood-Ridge, Veolia said, but there were no consumption restrictions.

Veolia was "rigorously testing" the water, company spokesperson Debra Vial said.

Water reached the parking lot of the Panera Bread restaurant just east of Spring Valley Road. Multiple streets in the neighborhood were closed off as crews went to work. A massive hole filled with water stretched across the road.

The upper floors of Hackensack University Medical Center were briefly without water service, a hospital spokesperson said. Full water service was restored at 4:30 a.m., and the campus was never fully without service.

Spring Valley Road was blocked off from Prospect Street to Brookfield Avenue on Monday, as repair crews worked on fixing the damage in the middle of the road. Drivers exiting Route 4 west were redirected back onto the highway at the U-turn near Panera.

Brookfield Avenue resident Merrel Kovats said she got an alert around 12:30 a.m. informing her of the break, but she didn't see or hear the gushing water that came from underground.

The break came a day after Veolia lifted a boil water advisory following a July 18 water main break in Ridgefield that left water contaminated with E. coli. That advisory affected Cliffside Park, Edgewater, Fairview, Fort Lee, Leonia, Palisades Park and Ridgefield.
