Mansfield Labor Day Parade steps off at 10 a.m.
The annual Labor Day Parade will kick off at 10 a.m. Monday at the five-way light at Park Avenue West and Marion Avenue.
Hundreds of area residents each year line Park Avenue West on Labor Day to honor and recognize generations of working men and women during the Labor Day Parade.
According to Norm Shoemaker, president of the Mid Ohio Labor Council, the parade will travel east on Park Avenue to the Richland Carrousel Park at 75 N. Main St., where free hot dogs and free rides will be provided from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Parade entrants will line up at 8:30 a.m. on Marion Avenue.
Shoemaker said the parade will include local labor councils and the Steelworkers, the Mansfield Shrine Club and more.
Melissa Cropper, Ohio AFL_CIO secretary-treasurer, will also be part of the parade, Shoemaker said.
Who Created Labor Day?
In the wake of this massive unrest and in an attempt to repair ties with American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law. More than a century later, the true founder of Labor Day has yet to be identified.
Many credit Peter J. McGuire, cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, while others have suggested that Matthew Maguire, a secretary of the Central Labor Union, first proposed the holiday, according to history.com.
