Manchester man sought in Maple Street store shooting

Aug. 14—A 22-year-old Manchester man is wanted in a convenience store shooting Wednesday that left another man in critical condition, police said.

A warrant was issued Wednesday for the arrest of Diogene Nsengiyumva after a shooting at 9:45 a.m. at El Parcero Market at 326 Maple St. A 27-year-old man, whose name was not released, was seriously injured in the attack outside the store.

Nsengiyumva is wanted for charges of first-degree assault, reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, and theft by unauthorized taking (shoplifting), police said.

Investigators urged anyone who sees Nsengiyumva not to approach him, but to call police immediately.

The gun used in the shooting has not been recovered.

Around the same time the shooting was reported, Manchester dispatchers received a call that a man had walked into the Elliot Hospital with a gunshot wound. Police determined the two incidents were connected. The victim was shot during a confrontation with another man inside the store, they said.

The victim remained at Elliot Hospital in critical condition but was stable late Wednesday, police said.

Manchester Police Chief Allen Aldenberg said several employees were inside the store at the time of the shooting, but none were injured.

"The individual with respect to the shooting is currently at large, so there's obviously a public safety risk," Aldenberg told reporters outside El Parcero Market. "It appears these two individuals may have been known to one another, and this wasn't a random act of violence. This wasn't a robbery that took place inside the store."

Nsengiyumva and the shooting victim may have had "some history" between them — "probably not the best history, so that's what we're trying to navigate through here," Aldenberg said.
