Man killed when hit by Amtrak train south of Hughson

A man died Monday morning when he was hit by an Amtrak train in an apparent suicide south of Hughson.

Stanislaus County sheriff’s Sgt. Erich Layton said the man parked his vehicle near the intersection of Santa Fe Avenue and Geer Road. When the northbound train approached just before 8 a.m., the man stepped in front of it.

The train was stopped for several hours while authorities investigated. The man has not yet been identified.
