Man dies in Whatcom County after an apparent paragliding accident

A Vancouver, B.C., man was found dead after 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, high on Church Mountian off Highway 542 in Whatcom County after an apparent paragliding accident, according to Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Deb Slater.

The victim was identified as 56-year-old Mathais Jakob, Slater told The Bellingham Herald in an email.

Whatcom County Sheriff’s deputies and members of the Bellingham Mountain Rescue Council responded to a report of a deceased paraglider Sunday afternoon, according to Slater.

Jakob’s body was located and recovered by a U.S. Border Patrol helicopter and taken to the Whatcom County Medical Examiner’s Office, Slater said.
