Update: Police identified the victim as 23-year-old Wayne Steward.
Detectives are trying to determine what led to a shooting that killed one man in a neighborhood in south Kansas City Thursday morning.
Officers were dispatched to the 9500 block of Harrison Street near Indian Creek just before 10:15 a.m. on a report of the sound of gunfire. They found a man near the doorway of a residence unresponsive and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, police said in a release.
Officers rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived and transported the man to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
“We do not have any preliminary information indicating what led up to the shooting, and we do not currently have anyone in custody,” Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokeswoman with KCPD, said in an email.
Police were gathering evidence and talking to witnesses Thursday. Gonzalez said the community has been instrumental in helping detectives make progress in identifying a person of interest.

The killing is Kansas City’s 90th homicide in 2024, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, Kansas City had recorded 126 homicides.
