Man dies in car crash on Log Cobin Drive after high-speed chase in west Macon

A Forsyth man died early Wednesday morning after a high-speed chase with police led to a crash on Log Cabin Drive in Macon, officials said.

Rashaad Treyvon Jones, 26, lost control of his vehicle just before 1 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Log Cabin Drive and Mercer University Drive, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and Bibb coroner Leon Jones.

The automobile “became airborne” before flipping over and crashing into a tree. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. He was the only person in the vehicle during the crash.

The chase began when Jones reportedly turned right illegally at a red light at the intersection of Columbus Road and Mercer University Drive up the road from the Macon Mall. Jones kept driving when a deputy tried to pull him over.

Jones led the deputy on a chase through Summer Hill Drive before hitting Log Cabin Drive, where he kept driving until the crash at the intersection of Mercer University Drive, police said.

It was unclear in the release where Jones was going when the chase began. The Georgia State Patrol is still investigating the crash. Jones had previously been convicted of aggravated assault from a shooting in 2016, records show. He was released from prison in 2021.
