A lot of Miami Marlins injuries mean a lot of roster moves. Where things stand

The immediate aftermath of Saturday’s injury-filled outing for the Miami Marlins is now clear.

Three players landed on the injured list: third baseman/outfielder Brian Anderson with a left shoulder sprain, right-handed starting pitcher Max Meyer with a right elbow sprain and right handed relief pitcher Tommy Nance with a right groin strain.

Replacing those three: infielder Willians Astudillo and right-handed relief pitchers Jeff Brigham and Huascar Brazoban.

Miami moved second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. and right-handed pitchers Cody Poteet and Anthony Bender to the 60-day injured list to make room for Astudillo, Brigham and Brazoban on the 40-man roster.

One player who, at least for the time being, has cleared the injury hurdle: first baseman/designated hitter Garrett Cooper, who left Saturday’s 1-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates after being hit by a pitch on his right wrist while pinch-hitting in the eighth inning. Cooper remains on the active roster but was not in the starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale with the Pirates.

Nance’s injury is the only unexpected move of the group. He pitched a scoreless third inning on Saturday albeit needing 28 pitches to get through the frame.

As for the other two:

Meyer exited the game after facing just three batters and throwing 10 pitches when he felt something in his elbow when he faced Ke’Bryan Hayes, the third and final batter he would face. Meyer walked Hayes on four pitches and immediately signaled to the dugout.

“If I feel any discomfort … I’ve got to be honest with myself and the staff,” Meyer said Saturday of taking extra precaution after the nerve issue. “I know I want to get back out there and do what I can, but I think that we need to take care of all the elbow stuff right now so I don’t have to deal with it in the future.”

Anderson felt the left shoulder injury occur when he dove to his left on a Cal Mitchell groundball that beat the shift for a single in the sixth inning. It was one of several dives Anderson made on groundballs Saturday.

“I was fine on all of them,” Anderson said, “until the last one.”

Anderson, who had two separate injured list stints last season due to left shoulder subluxation and ultimately needed surgery, also felt fine enough to hit in the seventh, flying out to lead off the frame, but was replaced defensively for the bottom half of the inning.

“A tough day for us,” Anderson said.

And as for the three replacements:

This is Astudillo’s second stint with the Marlins. He hit .270 with one home run, four RBI and five runs scored in 17 games the first time he was with the big-league club this season. He is starting at third base on Sunday.

Brigham is back in the big leagues for the first time since 2020 after being sidelined for 19 months with a biceps nerve injury. The 30-year-old righty has a 3.96 ERA with 62 strikeouts against 20 walks in 38 2/3 innings.

Brazoban, 32, has yet to make his MLB debut and was out of professional baseball from 2018-2021 before the Marlins signed him to a minor-league deal this offseason. The 6-3, 155-pound righty has a 3.18 ERA with 59 strikeouts against 16 walks over 45 1/3 innings. Opponents are hitting just .198 against him.

And as for the three players moved to the 60-day IL, they were all logical choices.

Chisholm has a stress fracture in his lower back and isn’t expected back until September at the earliest. Bender has been on the IL since May 22 with back stiffness, so he is already past the 60-day mark. Poteet went on the IL for the second time with a right elbow injury this week. His season is likely over.
