Little girl killed in Mesa crash, police say

MESA, Ariz. - Police are investigating a crash that left a young girl dead in Mesa.

The incident happened near Broadway Road and Horne around 6:15 p.m. on May 23.

Mesa Police say a 7-year-old girl was on a scooter in an apartment complex driveway when she was hit.

The crash was initially reported as a hit-and-run. However, police say the driver stayed at the scene.

"A full size F-150 truck with off road tires was traveling westbound on 3rd Ave against the sun set [sic] when it made a right hand turn into the driveway of a multiple family home (fourplex)," police said. "The vehicle drove to the back of the building and parked. When the driver walked to the front of the building, he noticed a little girl and her scooter lying in the driveway with injuries. The driver immediately called 911, unaware of what happened to her."

Speed and impairment were not factors in the collision.

"This is believed to be a very tragic accident with no charges filed against the driver," police said.

No names have been released in this case.
