Lexington Fire Department issues burn ban through the weekend. Here’s what to know

A red flag warning from the National Weather Service has pushed the Lexington Fire Department to a issue burn ban, effective immediately.

“Due to low rainfall amounts, coupled with high winds and low humidity, dangerous fire weather conditions exist,” a notice posted online by the Lexington-Fayette County Division of Emergency Management announced Thursday.

The burn ban is active until at least 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, the emergency management agency said.

A statewide burn ban is already in effect during the day.

“Citizens should avoid setting any fire outdoors until after the ban expires. This includes refuse, cooking and construction debris fires. All open burn permits are suspended for the duration of the ban. The ban applies to all residents and businesses in Fayette County, including those in rural and urban areas,” it said.

A hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service Thursday warned of “elevated fire danger this afternoon with the combination of gusty 30 to 35 mph west winds and low relative humidities this afternoon.”

Similar conditions are expected to unfold Friday, the NWS said.

To report a fire, call 911 in emergency situations and 859-231-5600 in non-emergent situations.
