Lake Center Christian revs up for couch races

HARTVILLE – Students at Lake Center Christian School are set to hop on the couch – and race it.

The senior high students have been transforming used couches into fresh, rolling representations of their class. Once the final touches are added, it is off to the races for ninth- through 12th-graders.

The school’s long tradition of Couch Races will resume at 8:45 a.m. Friday at the Hartville campus.

Younger students, faculty and parents will gather to cheer on the racers.

“The Couch Races are a highlight everyone looks forward to each year,” said Campus Pastor Jeff Knori. “It is great to see the competition among the classes.”

Rules hold that the converted couches, which were donated for the event, must have three cushions, and have a minimum of 6 feet between the armrests to qualify. Each couch also must be gravity-powered – no engines or motors allowed. All runners and riders wear helmets for safety.

“The Couch Races really are special. It is important to begin traditions and maintain them. And this one creates a lot of laughter and fun,” Knori said.

The 12th annual event will wrap up a weeklong competition at Lake Center. Other activities have included the annual hallway decorating contest. The entire week, which includes a spiritual growth component, is designed to encourage collaboration among classmates and increase school spirit.
