LAFD recruit killed on 101 Freeway in Studio City hit-and-run crash

LOS ANGELES - A young man killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the 101 Freeway in Studio City Monday morning has been identified as a recruit firefighter with the Los Angeles Fire Department, officials announced.

The multi-vehicle crash was reported just after 5 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway south of Vineland Avenue at Campo De Cahuenga, according to the California Highway Patrol. A SigAlert was issued shortly afterward, shutting down all northbound lanes in the area.

A preliminary investigation reveals recruit firefighter Jacob Fuerte, 22, was involved in a crash with another vehicle, driven by Derek Tapia of Montclair. After this initial crash, Fuerte got out of his car, which was still in traffic lanes according to CHP, and was struck by an unknown vehicle. Fuerte died at the scene.

CHP reported that Fuerte, a Riverside resident, was driving a 2000 Jeep that collided with a 2021 Ford driven by Derek Tapia, 36, of Montclair, who was not injured. Fuerte was allegedly on his way to training at the time of the incident.

"He got out of his vehicle to likely assess the situation and help anyone in need when he was hit by another car," the LAFD said in a statement.

The incident is being investigated as a hit-and-run crash. No suspect vehicle information has been released.

During Tuesday's Los Angeles City Council meeting, Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez introduced a motion that would establish a $50,000 reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of the individual responsible for Fuerte's death.

A procession was held from the location of the crash site to the LA County Coroner's Office on N. Mission Road.

"We extend our deepest sympathy to immediate family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," the LAFD said in a statement. "Details regarding the memorial service will be shared as they become available."

Fuerte joined the LAFD on February 12, 2024. He was participating in week 10 of a 20-week training program.

Fuerte's father is a 17-year veteran firefighter/paramedic with the department, and the young man was hoping to follow in his footsteps.

Fuerte is survived by his father, two sisters, and a brother.
