Kopp's Frozen Custard has issued an apology after linking "National Pro-Life Cupcake Day" to one of their Flavor of the Day offerings this month, according to a statement the business shared on social media Monday afternoon.

The iconic Milwaukee purveyor of flavors became the subject of online buzz Monday morning when it posted a calendar of upcoming holiday-themed flavors for October. It included "National Pro-Life Cupcake Day" on Oct. 9, featuring the flavor "Hey Cupcake."

National Pro-Life Cupcake Day was founded by a group called Cupcakes for Life to raise awareness about abortion and encourage dialogue on the topic, with cupcakes used as a means of bringing people together for the chat, according to National Today.

In the statement, Kopp's said linking "National Pro-Life Cupcake Day" with its long-running flavor "Hey Cupcake" was an "oversight" and "an honest mistake."

"It was never our intention to get political and appear as though we have taken a side in this ongoing debate," the statement said.

Wisconsin's 1849 law banning abortions except in situations where the mother’s life is in danger went into effect after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision in June.

Kopp's said it removed "Hey Cupcake" from its flavor forecast for Oct. 9, and revised its list and website.

"Going forward, we strive to be more diligent in reviewing our flavor lists and any flavors we may link to a national holiday," the statement said.

Before the statement was posted, one user on Reddit said a Greenfield manager told the user that it was a mistake.

"They pull in a number of days each year to coincide with flavors to 'add a bit of fun' to the flavor forecast and this was basically a copy paste error job," user LouieMumford wrote. "They are actually going to be pulling the flavor forecast and reissuing. 'We want Kopps to be a place where people can come and enjoy a scoop and a cone and not have to worry about politics."

Kopp's also has locations in Glendale and Brookfield.

"We are sincerely sorry to all of our customers, loyal and new, whom we offended with our attempt to link a National Day with our Flavor of the Day offerings," Kopp's statement said. "We have always tried our best to keep politics and our staff's personal views out of the business and just focus on serving great food. It is still our number one priority as a business to welcome everyone who walks through our doors."
