Kansas has rolled out a new license plate. Here’s what to know about getting yours

About eight months after a statewide vote decided on the design of the new state standard license plate, it will finally be seen on Kansas vehicles.

The new plate design was unveiled last December after Kansans had to choose between five options. The winning plate received 53% of the vote.

The new design features the Kansas statehouse’s dome as well as the phrase “to the stars” lining the bottom.

The design will replace any standard carved plates needing to be replaced, as well as any new standard plates issued. The Department of Revenue also recently unveiled the new personalized license plate design, which was also voted on by Kansans. The agency says that the new personalized plates will be issued next year.

So, can you choose to back out of getting the new standard plate? Does everyone get a new one? Here’s what you need to know about the process before you go to renew your registration.

Will all license Kansas plates be replaced?

Only drivers with a standard embossed plate will need to undergo replacement, according to the Kansas Department of Revenue.

How do I get a new plate?

Drivers who need their plate replaced will have their renewal flagged. After they renew their registration, the tag office will provide a temporary tag as well as a decal.

The temporary tag and the decal should be kept in the glove box while they wait for their new license plate, which should arrive within 30 days. The decal should go on the new license plate – not the temporary tag or the old plate.

If a temporary tag gets lost or damaged before the 30 days, drivers should call their local tag office to get a new one.

If I need a new plate, can I renew online?

Drivers can renew their registration online, even if they need a replacement plate. The temporary tag and decal will be provided via mail.

You can also register your vehicle on the state’s iKan website at ikan.ks.gov. or through its mobile app.

Will I have the same Kansas license plate number?

Drivers will be issued a new license plate number when they get a new plate due to changes in the alpha-numeric sequence, which includes more digits than before.
