Irvington man dies after kayak trip off Keyport

KEYPORT — An Irvington man died Sunday after kayaking in Raritan Bay, according to borough police.

Keyport police received a call about two kayakers in distress around 1:35 p.m., according to the police Facebook page.

"Keyport Police Officers arrived on scene and observed one subject on the shore, who stated that their friend was still in the water," police wrote in the Facebook post. "Officer Degroat, a member of the Monmouth County Dive Team, was able to use a kayak and locate the subject in the water."

Keyport's fire department also responded with a boat, police said.

First responders started CPR on the man, described only as a 64-year-old resident of Irvington. The man's name was not immediately released.

Keyport First Aid took the man to Bayshore Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
