Investigation continues into double-fatal crash on U.S. 340 in West Virginia

RIPPON, W.Va. — Two people were killed in a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon on U.S. 340 in West Virginia near the Virginia line, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

The 1 p.m. crash closed the road, also known as Berryville Pike, for about three hours, Lt. Robert Sell said.

The identities of the people involved were not available Tuesday pending notification of next of kin and because of the continuing investigation of the crash, Sell said.

The crash occurred as a northbound Toyota Yaris crossed the center line of the wet roadway on a curve and was struck in the passenger side by the front of a southbound Jeep Wrangler that was pulling a small utility trailer, he said.

The car came to rest in the parking lot of the Rainbow Road Club at 137 Berryville Pike, according to Sell.

The two female occupants of the car were pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver and female passenger in the Jeep were treated at the scene for minor injuries, Sell said.
