Consumer prices are up across the U.S., but the St. Louis metro area has recently been hit harder than several other large metros, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas and other localities, according to a new study.

Finance website WalletHub named the St. Louis, Mo./Illinois metro area in its Aug. 10 article Cities Where Inflation is Growing the Most. WalletHub ranked St. Louis 11th in the listing, which evaluated 23 major metropolitan areas based on two Consumer Price Index metrics.

St. Louis’ CPI change from April 2022 to June 2022 was 2.4%, and prices were up 8.4% from June 2021 to June of this year, the most recent month for which data were available. Some metro areas had data current from July.

The CPI in Chicago increased by 1.5% in the past two months, and the Los Angeles metro had a 0.9% increase. Chicago’s CPI increased at a lower rate compared to St. Louis’ for the past two months, but came in at 0.4% higher than in St. Louis for the year-to-year change.

WalletHub gave an overall score of 29.95 to the St. Louis area. Scores given ranged from 2.54 (for urban Honolulu, Hawaii) to 100 (Anchorage, Alaska).

How much are prices up in the St. Louis metro?

The CPI for all items in the St. Louis area is up 7% from July 2021 to June 2022, but the cost of food and gasoline has had larger increases.

The cost of food away from home is up 10% from July 2021 to June 2022, while grocery costs are up 14% from July 2021 to July of this year.

The price of gasoline has skyrocketed since July 2021, though it’s seen a dip from June to July. Gas prices are up 52% from July 2021 to July 2022, and those prices have increased by 64% as of June 2022.
