FRANKLIN 58, FL0YD CENTRAL 51

Tristan Coleman rarely plays a big scoring role in the offense for the suddenly red-hot Grizzly Cubs (1mar2-14), but he picked a masterful time for his first double-figure scoring effort since just before New Year’s Day, scoring eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter to help Franklin knock off the favored No. 13 Highlanders (20-5) in the Seymour Regional semifinals. But the Cubs’ surge to their deepest tournament in 25 years didn’t come without drama; after Franklin built a 45-31 lead midway through the fourth quarter, Floyd Central rallied to slice the lead to 50-49 before the Cubs knocked down enough free throws to hold on and earn a rematch from a December loss to Bloomington North. Coleman was joined in double figures by Carson Hunter, Sam Auger and Micah Davis in a balanced attack. Brady Moore and Caleb Washington combined for 29 for the Highlanders.

At Loogootee, the Class A No. 7 Lancers were clinging to a slender one-point lead with just 17.8 seconds left to play before Jaylen Mullens drilled a pair of free throws to lift the No. 2 Cougars. The contest was even tighter and more defensive-minded than North’s 55-47 win at Edinburgh in February, and the Cougars relied heavily on shutting down two of the Lancers’ double-figure scoring threats, Caleb Dewey and Jarrett Turner, who combined for just 13 points. Mullen led all scorers with 16, and Lance Wilson scored all seven of his points in the decisive fourth quarter.
