Hudson County man pleads guilty to sexual assault at FDU-Florham Park campus

A Hudson County man pleaded guilty to kidnapping and the sexual assault of a young woman in her Fairleigh Dickinson University dorm room.

Jayshawn Moore appeared before state Superior Court Judge Stephen Taylor in Morris County with his attorney for a plea hearing on Wednesday.

During the hearing, Moore admitted that on April 9, he waited for his girlfriend, with whom he was having relationship problems, at her dorm room on the Florham Park campus for a "substantial amount of time" before she returned after being let in by some students leaving the building.

Once the victim came back to her dorm, Moore said, they went into the room and continued to fight, and he physically prevented her from leaving the room. He said he held the victim against her will in her dorm room for several hours, intimidated her and sexually assaulted her.

The minimum sentence that can be imposed for kidnapping is 15 years, and the minimum sentence for aggravated sexual assault is 10 years.

The state is recommending that Moore be sentenced to 15 years for the kidnapping and 10 years for the sexual assault. The sentences would run concurrently.

Moore must serve out 85% of his sentence because of the No Early Release Act, meaning he would be required to serve 12 years and 9 months.

Taylor scheduled the sentencing for Dec. 15 but noted that it would likely be moved into next year while the court waits for an evaluation of Moore at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Woodbridge.
