Tyrod Taylor’s hamstring injury has forced the Houston Texans to completely change their depth chart at quarterback before their Week 3 matchup with the Carolina Panthers.

Not only have the Texans placed Taylor on injured reserve and named Davis Mills the starting quarterback, they’ve decided to promote Jeff Driskel from their practice squad.

Driskel, a former sixth-round pick, has played for the Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers since entering the league in 2016. In 15 games, Driskel has completed 58.6 percent of his passes for 2,120 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also added 309 yards and three scores on the ground.

The reason Driskel was called up from the Texans’ practice squad is because he’ll need to be the primary backup to Mills on Thursday night.

Houston does have Deshaun Watson on its roster, but he’s not expected to play a single snap until his legal situation comes to a close. Even if the NFL finishes its investigation this season, it’s possible Watson receives a suspension.

The Texans could potentially work out a few quarterbacks after this Thursday’s showdown with the Panthers. After all, Taylor will need to miss at least the next three games since he’s on injured reserve.

It’ll be interesting to see how Houston’s quarterback room holds up during Taylor’s absence. Prior to injuring his hamstring, Taylor was playing very well in head coach David Culley’s offense.
