High school football: Big plays by Hanford highlights win over Sanger led by its QB
To stop the Hanford High football team’s explosive attack, it may have to take some luck to slow them down.
Like starting with Bullpups quarterback Daniel Gomez.
The Bee’s eight-ranked Sanger found that out in a game that went back-and-forth early on until the seventh-ranked Bullpups found some cushion in a 50-34 victory Friday night at Tom Flores Stadium.
It wasn’t until the fourth quarter when Hanford extended its lead for good.
The Bullpups can also thank Taveon Patterson and Kourdey Glass.
Patterson scored on a 9-yard run for a 42-34 lead and Hanford and sealed the deal on Glass’ 51-yard run that proved to be too much to overcome.
Bullpups coach Cannon Sanchez said it was a “complete 180 after Kennedy.
Hanford defeated Kennedy 45-29.
The Bullpups’ defense held the Apaches to just six points in the second half after allowing 28 points in the first half.
And they were led by senior quarterback Daniel Gomez who passed for four touchdowns and did damage on the run, including a 25-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
He finished the game completing 20 of 30 for 345 yards and five touchdowns. Gomez then had 10 carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns much to the delight of Sanchez.
Another highlight for Gomez was when he connected on a 25-yard touchdown pass to JC Turner with 10 seconds left. The Bullpups followed the touchdown with a successful two-point conversion on a run.
“Best game he’s ever played,” he said. “Was cool and collected in a hostile environment.”
