Hamilton High School students had plenty to celebrate as their boys’ basketball team was wrapping up a victory over West Catholic High School on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

But when Hamilton Community Schools Superintendent Brad Lusk made an announcement to the student section during the game’s closing seconds, the Michigan high schoolers suddenly had another reason to storm the court in excitement.

Lusk had just announced that school had been canceled Wednesday for a snow day.

Sophomore student Aiden Lynch captured the moment in all of its glory, giving the impassioned announcement while broadcasting the game. Hamilton Community Schools referred to it as “the call of the century.”

“And Lusk calls a snow day!” Lynch exclaimed on air. “Breaking news — Lusk just called a snow day! Right here at the student section! Oh my goodness, I have never seen that before. Breaking news, Lusk called a snow day at Hamilton! Wooo — no school for me tomorrow!”

The video shows the students celebrate the snow day announcement on the court as players from both teams shake hands. More than 13,000 people have viewed the video as of Thursday morning.

Lynch told WOOD he was “literally dancing” as he made the call.

“I see Dr. Lusk walking over to the student section and I was like, there’s no way this is about to happen, and I watched as he called it,” Lynch said. “I kind of just assumed that by the reaction of the student section he had just called it. I got up and I just started going nuts on the livestream.”

A second video shared Wednesday showed footage of Lusk approaching the student section to give them the good news. The students later posed for a photo with the superintendent.

On Wednesday, the school district called upon Lynch to announce that students would receive another snow day Thursday.

“Gotta love Aiden. He is one passionate kid on the football field or broadcasting,” one commenter said. “You rock Aiden.”

“This is great, I think we have a sports/weather broadcaster in the making,” another commenter said.

Hamilton High School is in Hamilton, about 35 miles southwest of Grand Rapids.
